The constitutional provision forbidding to dissolve the Verkhovna Rada, which was elected over a snap poll announced after the President of Ukraine terminated ahead of schedule the authorities of the previous convocation of parliament, during a year since the day of election, has nothing to do with the current situation.

According to the President`s press-office, President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko claimed this during consultations on termination of the parliament authorities ahead of schedule on Wednesday.

The President recalled that the last-year snap poll was appointed by the President’s decree #497 of June 5, 2007 not because of the termination of the Verkhovna Rada ahead of schedule.

“In June of 2007, the President of Ukraine did not make decision to terminate the authorities of the Verkhovna Rada of V convocation ahead of schedule. The snap parliamentary poll, which took place on September 30 of 2007, was appointed by the President because the Verkhovna Rada became unauthorized, and it was impossible to restore its authority”, the President stressed.

Thus, according to him, the snap poll in 2007 did not follow the mechanism stipulated by the part four Article 90 of the Constitution of Ukraine, which demands a year interval after the election.

“This provision of the Constitution has nothing to do with the current situation”, Victor Yushchenko is confident.

According to the President`s press-office, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Arseniy Yatseniuk, first deputy Speaker Oleksander Lavrynovych, deputy Speaker Mykola Tomenko, Party of Regions faction leader Victor Yanukovych, BYuT faction leader Ivan Kyrylenko, OU-PSD faction leader Vyacheslav Kyrylenko, Lytvyn’s Bloc faction leader Volodymyr Lytvyn, and Communist faction leader Petro Symonenko.
