President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko is confident that only the nation, and not politicians, will support amendments to the Constitution that he proposed.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, he said this to a press conference on Wednesday.

Victor Yushchenko noted that, as of today, politicians are not interested in introducing amendments into the Ukrainian Constitution, which would form a new balance of power and would separate parties from forming state institutions.

“That’s why I’m convinced that 47 million people [Ukrainians - UNIAN] are interested most of all in a new edition of the Constitution. This is their Constitution”, the President stressed, adding that current politicians will not support the necessary amendments.

The President specified that he would like to introduce amendments into the Constitution concerning the role of local governments and a two-chamber parliament.

“It’s like my political will – if we do not make any democratic European active Constitution, we will see colossal risks in passing the democratic process”, the President stressed.

Asked by journalists whether his words about a political will mean that he will not take part in the Presidential election, the President said: “I will take part. It’s so clear, so evident”.
