Yushchenko assesses Luzhkov’s statement as disdainful

President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko assesses as disdainful the statement of Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov about Sevastopol, and believes Ukraine applied a proper measure against him in line with the national Constitution.

According to the President`s press-office, Victor Yushchenko said this in an interview with the Ukrainian BBC office.

“If we receive a guest in our house, he should respect interests of this state, interests of these people, regardless of their nationality. If you visit any country of the world, you try to say something in their native language. And, by doing so, you show your respect to this nation… When you enter somebody’s else house, pay a compliment to the host. And you will be just more appreciated for that. And, to the contrary, if somebody tells something disdainful about the Ukrainian nation, Ukrainian sovereignty, the Ukrainian territorial integrity, the Ukrainian frontier, he will be treated with measures in line with the Ukrainian Constitution”, Victor Yushchenko said.

The President also stressed it is important for him that the Ukrainian nation understand that such statements are a humiliation for it. “We must have a self-sufficiency”, he said.

The President believes Ukraine and Russian must speak about serious international relations, and not to toss away at every occasion international agreements that determine the strategic partnership.

“A problem is easy to create, but we will need years to solve it”, he said.

The President also expressed a hope that newly elected RF President Dmytriy Medvedev will support active international dialog between the two states.
