U.S. Ambassador very disappointed with Tymoshenko`s decisionComments Gene : Contract should either be cancelled or renegotiated
While I agree with Taylor that they should give Vanco the opportunity to renegotiate and to prove that they (Vanco) have the ability to do what they promised. But, the fact is that the terms are unfavorable to Ukraine. It was a bad deal approved by Yanu and Yush benefitting Renat and not Ukraine...and possibly benefitting Yush`s brother Petro. Looking into Vanco`s history, I have many questions about their capabilities...and especially their relations with the Russian businessman and Gazprom. The US government turned a blind eye when Yushchenko was breaching the "rule of law" they said nothing. Now when it suits them they complain. the fact is that there is grounds for government to question the basis of the agreement. A change in ownership normally triggers a review and possible cancellation of exploration licences, Much of it depends on the terms of the license granted. The proposed purchase of P&O triggered a congressional review by the United States who also feared security issues. The diversification of interests and performance delivery requirements are common issues for concern as many companies with competing interest are known to shuffle competition and hamper development of what could be competing operations to their other interest. How often do you hear of pharmaceutical companies buying up patents rights of a drug only to prevent the drug from going to market. Due process and rule of law should decide who is in the right. The US Ambassador should think carefully before they undermine Ukraine`s National Security Interest.. Phil rather rude and derogatory comments does little to promote or support his concerns... It should be noted that the decision taken by the Ukrainian Government was made unamously by the Cabinet which includes representatives of the Presidential secretariat. |
